About Us

We are an award-winning musical theatre company fortunate enough to perform in Shakespeare's home town of Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire.

Formerly known as Stratford-upon-Avon Operatic Society, we formed in 1921 and performed our first show, The Mikado, at the Old Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in February 1922. Since that time, we have performed almost a hundred theatre productions and several hundred concerts throughout England, Europe and even further afield. Following the destruction of the Memorial Theatre by a fire in 1926, we have appeared at several venues, including the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, the Swan Theatre, the Courtyard Theatre and the Civic Hall.

The society has undergone many changes in its ninety years, changes in directors, musical directors and choreographers. The style of shows produced by the company has also evolved, from the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas of the early years to the wide range of musical shows performed today. For this reason, the society was renamed as Stratford Musical Theatre Company in 2010.

The company is affiliated to the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) and has received six NODA awards for Best Production, including Crazy For You (2003), My Fair Lady (2004), 42nd Street (2005), West Side Story (2006), Chess (2009) and Return to the Forbidden Planet (2011).
